Intuitive Strategic Planning
Intuitive Strategic Planning in action:
a case study.
A group of people was attempting to set up a new wellness center at a
large city hospital. Although their end goal was clear, they needed
help strategizing about how to get there—and about persuading
the hospital’s administration and external funders that their
idea was worth funding. How could they turn their vision into reality?
They called me, and we set to work.
- Clearing the
way. We began with a brief calming and centering exercise.
This allowed the participants to clear away their daily thoughts and
anxieties, opening up a space where each person could be comfortable
listening to her or his own intuition.
- Plotting the course.
Once they had allowed their intuitions to guide them, the group found
it much easier to imagine the work ahead in new, clear ways. In a short
time, we had formed a
steering teem to guide the work ahead; developed and adopted a
statement of purpose; identified the critical factors that would be
necessary to achieve the goal; and chosen a few areas of focus.
- Preserving the intuition. To
preserve the insights of the planning process for the future, I
developed a brief outline of the group’s work, along with
suggestions for how they could best achieve their goals.
- Realizing the plan. Two
weeks after our initial planning meeting, the group had a business plan
ready for presentation to the hospital’s administrators.
